West Valley College

West Valley College is a 2-year public school located near the Santa Cruz Mountains, 50 miles south of San Francisco and six miles west of San Jose. It has an enrollment of 12,893 students annually and offers flexible options, including online courses and distance learning. The Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges both accredit the school.

The Health Care Technology Department offers an Associate of Science option as well as certificate programs for careers such as clinical assistants, insurance billing specialists, massage therapists and medical office receptionists. The medical assistant programs prepare students to work in physician's offices, clinics or other outpatient centers.

Medical Assisting Programs

Associate of Science - Medical Assistant

This program takes 2-3 years to complete. In addition to general-education studies, students can expect to take courses in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, medical information processing, basic medical terminology, insurance billing and coding. The final semester consists of four internship credit hours.

Certificate of Achievement - Medical Assistant

Certificate candidates complete the same clinical and administrative courses that the associate's degree students take. Fewer electives are required, which means the program costs less and takes less time, but some employers may prefer or require applicants to hold an associate's degree. Students are prepared to assume roles in health care delivery upon completion.

Certificate of Achievement - Clinical Assistant

This 11-month program is designed for students who wish to work in back-office medical settings. Students acquire the skills for recording patient information such as weight, height, blood pressure and temperature. They also learn about obtaining case performing basic tests and preparing patients for the doctor examination. The program also teaches students about patient communication.

Certificate of Achievement - Medical Administrative Assistant

The medical administrative assistant program focuses on how to run a medical office, including credit and collection procedures, simple accounting, record keeping and the management of time and resources. Coursework covers introductory health care, medical transcription and basic business practices for a medical office.
