Oklahoma City University

Oklahoma City University is a 4-year, private university affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Its approximately 3,800 students can choose from among more than 60 undergraduate and 12 graduate degree programs. In 2011, U.S. News and World Report ranked Oklahoma City University as the 25th-best university in the West and its graduate nursing program as the 166th-best in the nation (

The Kramer School of Nursing at Oklahoma City University accepts all qualified bachelor's and master's degree candidates directly into its nursing program. Many colleges and universities place students on a waiting list after they are accepted to the school, but Oklahoma City University does not. The school also contains a 16,500 square-foot nursing building where students utilize a simulated hospital skills lab. Oklahoma City University prides itself on the success rate of students who take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). In 2009, its student sucess rate was 95%, compared to the national average of 85%-87%.

Nursing Degree Programs

Bachelor of Science in Nursing

The traditional bachelor's degree program in nursing is geared toward students who are not yet RNs. The program's first two years build a foundation in nursing. In order to continue on to junior-level nursing classes, students must have 3.0 cumulative GPAs or higher. Classes cover such topics as anatomy and physiology, microbiology, pharmacology and health assessment. Upon graduation, students are eligible to sit for the NCLEX-RN.

Accelerated curriculums are also available to licensed RNs who want to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or students who already have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a different field and want to change their career options. Students in the latter program can become eligible to sit for the NCLEX-RN in as little as 16 months.

Master of Science in Nursing

The Master of Science in Nursing program accommodates working nurses who want to specialize in nursing education or administration. Students must earn 33 credit hours in topics such as curriculum development, evaluation techniques and teaching strategies for a MSN with a concentration in nursing education. A MSN with a nursing administration concentration requires six hours of prerequisite courses in accounting and finance as well as 39 credit hours in topics such as medical regulations and quality assurance. Business courses for the nursing administration track are held in conjunction with the Meinders School of Business.

Doctor of Nursing Practice

The DNP is a part-time program for nurse midwives, nurse practitioners, nurse anesthetists or other licensed advanced practice nurses. Students must earn 30 credit hours after they have their master's degree. Coursework includes topics in nursing theory, organizational theory and grant writing. A capstone is required, but students do not need to complete a dissertation. Students also need to complete a minimum of 250 clinical hours while enrolled in the program.

Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing

Students enrolled in the Ph.D. in Nursing program visit the school for a 3-day intensive each semester. The rest of the time, students complete coursework online. Advanced courses in the Ph.D. program include healthcare policy, bioethics, theory development and quantitative research methods. Students must also complete a dissertation before they graduate.
