University of Cincinnati

The University of Cincinnati (UC) was chartered in 1819 as Cincinnati College and the Medical College of Ohio. The current name was established in 1870. In 2010, Forbes ranked UC 542nd among America's Best Colleges. U.S. News & World Report ranked UC 156th in its 2011 national college rankings and The Princeton Review named UC one of the Best Midwestern Colleges in the same year. In 2010, there were 41,357 students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs, both part- and full-time.

Housed in the College of Education, Criminal Justice and Human Services, the School of Criminal Justice offers three degree programs for students interested in paralegal studies. These programs are accredited through the American Bar Association. Students who qualify may join Alpha Phi Sigma, the National Criminal Justice Honor Society. There are no requirements to join the Criminal Justice Society, a student-sponsored organization. The bachelor's degree program is competitive, with 38.9% of applicants gaining admission.

Paralegal Studies Programs

Associate of Science in Legal Assisting Technology

This 90-credit-hour degree program includes general education courses and paralegal studies courses that discuss estates and probate, real estate and constitutional law. The plan of study also includes litigation and legal research. Field placements in private law firms, corporate legal offices, legal assistance organizations and other government agencies confer practical experience and professional contacts.

Bachelor of Science in Paralegal Studies

Students complete 183 credit hours in this program, including courses in probate, real estate, family law, bankruptcy, corporate, litigation and intellectual property. Legal research, tax law and litigation are other topics covered among the 21 required courses. Students complete an advanced paralegal seminar as a capstone course, in addition to a required internship.

Certified Legal Assistant Professional Certificate

This program is designed for individuals with a bachelor's degree. Core courses include successive courses in litigation, constitutional law and legal research. Students must complete a paralegal practicum and four paralegal specialty courses; they can choose from 11 topics, including domestic relations, constitutional law or real estate law for paralegals. In addition, students must complete a specialty elective and can choose from 12 classes, including criminal procedures, interviewing and investigating or introduction to practice management. This certificate can be completed in one year, but doesn't transfer to law schools.
