University of Missouri - Kansas City
The University of Missouri - Kansas City (UMKC) was founded in 1929 as the University of Kansas City. It opened its doors in 1933 to a class of just 265 students. Today, more than 13,000 undergraduate and graduate students are enrolled at UMKC, which has a student-to-faculty ratio of 14:1. The university provides students with internship opportunities with various businesses in Kansas City.
The Department of Psychology at UMKC is committed to educating students about mental health issues and improving mental health services by integrating psychology research with healthcare and public health research. The department also collaborates with a number of health services providers in the Kansas City area, including the University of Kansas Medical Center, the Cancer Institute and the Truman Medical Centers. Psychology faculty at UMKC conduct research in areas ranging from cognitive neuroscience and psycho-oncology to obesity and HIV/AIDS. Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Psychology
The B.A. program prepares students for careers after graduation as well as enrollment in graduate degree programs. Required coursework includes general psychology, experimental psychology, statistics and a number of electives, such as social psychology and clinical psychology. Undergraduate students also have the opportunity to work as student researchers in the various research groups throughout the department.
Master of Arts (M.A.) in Psychology
The master's program in psychology at UMKC provides students with opportunities to conduct research in various areas of experimental psychology and prepares them for research careers at universities and non-profit research institutes. Importantly, this degree program does not prepare students for clinical careers as practicing psychologists. Students concentrate their studies in one of two areas: health psychology or quantitative methods and research design.
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Clinical Psychology
The 5-year Ph.D. program, accredited by the American Psychological Association, is designed for students who are interested in careers in academic research or clinical practice. Courses are available in counseling and assessment methods, statistical analysis, psychopathology, experimental design and health psychology. Students have the opportunity to engage in research in a wide variety of areas; students are paired in a mentorship with a faculty member with similar interests. A clinical practicum is required during the second, third and fourth years. Students generally begin their dissertations during the fourth year.
