Home to more than 25,000 students, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte is a public, 4-year, research university. Students interested in graphic design can either complete a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Art with a studio concentration in graphic design, or a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Computer Science with a focus on graphics and visualization.
University of North Carolina at Charlotte
The University of North Carolina at Charlotte was founded in 1946 as the Charlotte Center and officially became the fourth campus of the University of North Carolina school system in 1965. The university offers nearly 100 undergraduate degree programs throughout 7 colleges on a 1,000-acre campus.
The school's Department of Art & Art History offers only three undergraduate degrees, including a Bachelor of Arts in Art dual-degree option, a Bachelor of Arts in Art History and a BFA in Art with a graphic design concentration. Studio art courses may only be taken by students who have been accepted by the department into an art program, which can be accomplished by the submission of an art portfolio. The Department of Computer Science, located within the College of Computing and Informatics, is home to 750 students and offers a wide variety of academic study in areas like robotics, database management, information systems, and graphics and visualization.
Graphic Design Programs
Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art with a Studio Concentration in Graphic Design
The BFA in Art with a studio concentration program is an intensive experience that requires students to complete 80 credit hours of coursework and studio experiences. Core courses include subjects like drawing, 2D design and 3D design. Graphic design coursework can include the history and methodology of graphic design, visual communication techniques, typography, digital arts, print production and advertising. Students may also choose to supplement coursework or studio time with a graphic design internship. As part of the program's multidisciplinary nature, graphic design students may take courses in other concentration areas such as illustration, digital arts, photography or painting.
Bachelor of Science in Computer Science with a Focus on Graphics and Visualization
Students completing a B.S. in Computer Science must complete a minimum of 45 credit hours of computer science courses, as well as mandatory coursework in information technology, mathematics and statistics. An outside concentration in a subject like mathematics or business must also be approved and completed for graduation, and requires 15 credit hours. Students with a focus area in graphics and visualization complete courses in the subjects of visual analytics, visual communication, information visualization, computer graphics and digital images.
