Medical Assisting Technical Certificates

The technical certificate programs in medical assisting offered by Ivy Tech Community College are designed to provide students with specific skills in the medical assisting fields. Students can choose from four different concentrations in the specialized fields of clinical assisting, administrative assisting, generalist assisting and outpatient insurance coding. Each of these concentrations consists of different core concentration courses, but most include courses in medical terminology, medical assisting techniques and general education. The certificate program may require the completion of 31-48 credit hours, depending on concentration, and only students with a generalist concentration will be qualified to sit for certification.

Associate of Applied Science in Medical Assisting

This 2-year, 61-credit-hour degree program can prepare students to work as clinical and administrative medical assistants in ambulatory settings. Students who graduate from the program can go on to become certified medical assistants, pharmacy technicians, phlebotomists and medical transcriptionists. Courses covered in the associate's degree program introduce students to medical terminology, laboratory procedures, administrative and billing processes, phlebotomy and basic clinical procedures. Students are also expected to complete general education courses in mathematics, social and behavioral sciences. The professional-technical courses also contain a medical assisting clinical externship and a medical assisting administrative externship.
