Adler School of Professional Psychology - Chicago

The Adler School of Professional Psychology is a 4-year, non-profit, private college offering graduate degree and post-master's degree certificate programs. Based on the philosophy of psychologist Alfred Adler, the Adler School's educational and therapist training philosophy incorporates social responsibility, social justice and community involvement. Dr. Adler's colleague Dr. Rudolf Dreikurs founded the Adler School of Professional Psychology in Chicago in 1952.

The Adler School actively engages in partnerships with more than 500 community organizations in the Chicago area. Its core values are social interest, pluralism, courage, excellence and pragmatism. The school is accredited by the American Psychological Association and the Illinois Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Professional Certification Association.

Substance Abuse Counseling Programs

Substance Abuse Counseling Certificate

Students can complete this post-baccalaureate certificate program by itself or they can take it along with a degree program. Students learn to provide alcohol and other drug abuse treatment, intervention and prevention. The program requires courses in issues and ethics in professional development, addictive disorders and treatment of these disorders. Focus is also placed on the biological, psychological, social and spiritual aspects of addictions. Students participate in a yearlong substance abuse practicum as well as two semesters of a practicum seminar. The capstone experience of the program is a case study, which students are required to create and present to their peers.

Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) in Clinical Psychology

In the Psy.D. program in clinical psychology, students work on developing core competencies in assessment, intervention, relationship, research, consultation, management and diversity. Students may choose to concentrate in substance abuse counseling. The 114-credit-hour program can be completed in five years. It requires the completion of a clinical practicum, community service, an internship and a doctoral dissertation. Students may complete a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology on their way to achieving their doctorate by completing particular courses, completing a practicum and passing a qualifying examination.
