In 2011, it ranked fourth on the list of best national universities in U.S. News & World Report.

In 2011, the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science was named the 16th best graduate engineering school in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. Its biomedical/bioengineering program also came in at No. 16. The Department of Biomedical Engineering offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs that focus mainly on cell and tissue engineering, biomedical imaging and biomechanics. Students can earn a Bachelor of Science, Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Biomedical Engineering.

Biomedical Engineering Programs

Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering

The first two years of the program consist of liberal arts courses and fundamental science courses in physics, chemistry, math and biology. In the final two years, students select a track in cell and tissue engineering, biomedical imaging or biomechanics. Advanced coursework applies the principles of engineering to the study of molecules, organs and other levels of biological systems. Other topics include quantitative physiology, fluid mechanics and biological transport systems.

Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering

This 30-credit program is offered with the same tracks as the bachelor's degree program and covers topics such as biophotonics, computational modeling, neuroscience and neuroengineering. Students complete independent research projects and projects with faculty members who are engaged in the study of implantable neurostimulators and imaging technology. The thesis option requires students to develop a major project based on computational, analytical or experimental research.

Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering

The doctoral program consists of coursework, research projects, qualifying examinations and a doctoral thesis, which is developed with the help of a faculty adviser. Ph.D. candidates are also expected to develop proficiency in other research areas, which ultimately enables them to collaborate with scientists from other disciplines. All candidates are required to complete three semesters of undergraduate teaching experience, as well as a research paper to be published in an academic journal.
