Top Columbus School for a Public Administration Master's Degree

Home to more than 64,000 students, Ohio State University in Columbus, OH, boasts several options for students seeking a Master of Public Administration (MPA). The John Glenn School of Public Affairs offers a 2-year MPA; for students who have an interest in a dual degree, there are multiple options. With the school of public affairs, several other schools collaborate to offer dual degree programs in public health, business administration or economics.

Ohio State University

U.S. News and World Report ranked Ohio State University (OSU) #56 among national universities in 2010. OSU was founded in 1870 as Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College by the state legislature. Eight years later, the college was renamed Ohio State University. In the fall 2010 semester, enrollment was 64,077 students. OSU offers 170 undergraduate majors, seven professional degrees, 143 master's degrees and 106 doctoral degree programs.

In 2010, U.S. News and World Report ranked the John Glenn School of Public Affairs #36 among public affairs programs and #26 in public affairs administration. The school was named for former U.S. Senator John Glenn.

Public Administration Programs

Master of Public Administration

In the first year, students complete an internship; in the past, students have secured internships with the U.S. Department of Commerce, the Ohio Attorney General's Office, the United Nations and the American Planning Association. Students take classes and policy labs in a variety of areas, from climate change and public policy to technology management. The second year of the program allows students to concentrate on one area of interest, culminating in a policy and management paper that explores their topics of interest. They write and present a paper as a capstone experience.

MPA and Master of Health Administration (MHA)

The program allows students to earn a dual degree - an MPA through the John Glenn School of Public Affairs and an MHA from the OSU College of Public Health. The MHA requires completion of 84 credit hours and includes courses in healthcare marketing, health policy and financial decision making for health services. Students complete 41 credit hours in public policy and management, and students are not required to complete a thesis in the College of Public Health. Students must complete a policy paper for the John Glenn School as part of the MPA degree requirements.

MPA and Master of Business Administration (MBA)

A student can complete this program, offered jointly by the John Glenn School of Public Affairs and the Fisher College of Business, in three years. This degree requires 140 credit hours, with 50 credits coming from courses required by each school. Required courses include financial accounting and reporting, public policy formulation and implementation, evaluation of public and non-profit programs and business in the global economy.

MPA and Master of Science in Agricultural, Environmental and Developmental (AED) Economics

It takes two years to complete this program. It requires a minimum of 106 credit hours, including 72 credit hours in core courses in public affairs and economics. Required courses cover topics ranging from creation and implementation of public policy to how public policy affects the market. Students learn about public finance, budgeting and how to manage the assets of public organizations, including human resources. A minimum of 15 credit hours must be dedicated to graduate-level electives in AED economics.
