The College of Business Administration at Florida International University

Florida International University was founded in 1969 in an abandoned aviation field. The university began offering classes in 1972. The business college opened at the same time. FIU students can find over 200 degree programs at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral level. The campus has five residence halls and is home to the International Hurricane Research Center and the Cuban Research Institute.

The College of Business Administration is the largest of all the colleges of FIU and consists of the School of Accounting, Alvah H. Chapman Jr. Graduate School of Business and R. Kirk Landon Undergraduate School of Business. In 2010, the college had an undergraduate student enrollment of approximately 6,000 and has an annual graduate student enrollment of more than 1,000 students. In 2011, U.S. News and World Report ranked the business school's undergraduate international business program 15th in the nation. FIU states that this program was ranked among the top 15 from 2005-2011.

Accounting Programs

Bachelor of Accounting

The Bachelor of Accounting degree program prepares students for a wide range of careers in the field of accounting. Students can acquire specific skills to examine and prepare financial statements for businesses, corporations and government offices. Graduates understand the role of auditing and how to use accounting data to make informed decisions regarding corporate strategy. Required core courses include financial accounting, management accounting, income tax accounting, governmental accounting and auditing.

Master of Accounting

The Master of Accounting degree program is designed to expand the range of career options for working accounting professionals. To enroll in the Master of Accounting program, students must hold an undergraduate degree in accounting or a related field or have completed prerequisite accounting courses. Coursework includes accounting systems, financial report evaluation, fraud analysis, tax strategies, theories of accounting and information systems auditing.

Students who have completed the graduate accounting degree program and want to enter the field of public accounting are qualified to sit for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam at the end of their studies. Students who complete the 10-month master's degree program can earn credentials as CPAs, Certified Management Accountants or Certified Internal Auditors.
