1. Cornell University in Ithaca, NY
Cornell was founded in 1865 and is considered an Ivy League school. In 2011, U.S. News and World Report ranked Cornell 15th among all universities in the nation. U.S. News and World Report ranked Cornell 11th among schools that offer graduate degrees in the biological sciences in 2010.
Biological and biomedical science degree programs are available through various schools in the university, including the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the College of Engineering, the College of Human Ecology and the College of Veterinary Medicine. Courses are also offered through the Weill Medical College in New York City as part of Cornell's biological sciences curricula. Examples of subjects taught include evolutionary biology, entomology, microbiology and neurobiology.
2. University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center - Dallas
The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas is both a place for patient care and for education. U.S. News and World Report ranked the Center's Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences 20th among colleges with biological sciences graduate programs in 2010. The school offers Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programs in several fields, including chemical biology, cancer biology, integrative biology, molecular biophysics, neuroscience and biomedical engineering. The graduate school's Division of Applied Science offers a unique master's degree program in biomedical communications.
3. University of Washington in Seattle
The University of Washington (UW) in Seattle was ranked 42nd among national universities by U.S. News and World Report in 2011. In 2010, U.S. News and World Report ranked UW 15th among schools with graduate programs in the biological sciences. The Department of Biology is a research-driven department that offers degrees at all levels, including a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in general biology, a B.S. in Plant Biology, a Master of Science (M.S.) in Biology for Teachers and a Ph.D. with multiple specialization options. Master's and doctoral programs in biomedical and health informatics are available through UW's Department of Medical Education and Biomedical Informatics.
