1. Harvard University in Boston, MA

Harvard was founded in 1636, making it the first university in the United States. Harvard was ranked first on the U.S. News and World Report's 2012 National Universities ranking. Harvard's business programs are also highly ranked: U.S. News and World Report also ranked its management program and the Harvard Business School (HBS) as the best in the nation in 2012. The Princeton Review recognized HBS as third on the Best Administered Business School ranking in 2011.

The Harvard Business School curriculum includes both required and elective classes. Required classes include coursework in finance, leadership, marketing, strategy, leadership, negotiation, and operations. After completing the required classes, students can choose from 96 elective courses in ten different areas. The Harvard Business School also offers five joint degree programs that allow students to complete problems in business along with public policy, public administration, law, medicine or dentistry.

2. Northwestern University in Evanston, IL

Founded in 1851, Northwestern operates three campuses. U.S. News and World Report ranked Northwestern 12th on its National Universities ranking in 2012. The J.L. Kellogg School of Management was founded in 1908 and was ranked fifth on the Best Business Schools rankings and fourth on the management rankings in 2012 in U.S. News and World Report. It is also ranked eighth on Princeton Review's Best Administered Business School ranking in 2011.

Northwestern offers broad business programs and allows students to choose from over 200 classes. All students must complete a core curriculum that includes the following coursework: accounting for decision making, business strategy, finance, marketing management, microeconomic analysis, operations management, statistical and mathematical methods for management decisions and strategies for learning and managing organizations. Students can choose specialized majors such as accounting information and management, analytical finance, decision sciences, entrepreneurship and innovation, finance, health enterprise management, international business, marketing, media management and real estate.

3. University of Michigan-Ann Arbor

The University of Michigan was originally founded in Detroit in 1817, but it was relocated to Ann Arbor in 1837. By 1866, the school was the largest in the nation. U.S. News and World Report ranked the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor 28th on the National Universities in 2012. The University of Michigan-Ann Arbor's management program was ranked fifth and its business school was ranked thirteenth by U.S. News and World Report in 2012. The Princeton Review ranked the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor eighth on the Best Administered Business School ranking in 2011.

The University of Michigan Ross School of Business requires that students complete a core curriculum in sequential order. Core coursework includes principals of finance accounting, applied microeconomics, applied business statistics, corporate strategy, financial management, marketing management, leading people and organizations, managerial accounting, operations management, multidisciplinary action projects and world economy.

The Ross School of Business does not differentiate officially between different business majors. Instead, the school encourages students to choose electives based on their career goals. Business students can complete dual degrees in business and another major area such as engineering, education, architecture, art and design, information, law, medicine, music, natural resources and environment, public health, public policy, social work and urban planning. In addition, students can complete special programs in real estate or political processes. Students can also participate in study abroad programs.
