School Overview

Students who are interested in becoming diesel mechanics can pursue certificate and/or Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) programs in diesel technology at the Pennsylvania College of Technology, San Jacinto College and Tidewater Community College. Once enrolled, students learn about the repair and maintenance of diesel engines and components found in farm and construction equipment, buses, semi-trucks and buses, as well some cars and boats.

1. Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport

In 2012, U.S. News & World Report named the Pennsylvania College of Technology, an affiliate of Pennsylvania State University, the 36th-best regional college in the North. Students who complete its A.A.S. in Diesel Technology program are prepared for optional manufacturer certifications, as well as EPA technician certifications in stationary refrigeration and motor vehicle air-conditioning. Alternatively, students can pursue a diesel technician certificate and study vehicle inspection, tune-ups, brake service and engine overhaul.

2. San Jacinto College in Pasadena, TX

In 2011, Community College Week ranked San Jacinto College, a 2-year public school, 4th on its list of the top 50 associate degree producers in science technologies. Students in the A.A.S. in Diesel Technology program learn about diesel engine testing and repair, brake systems, electrical systems and shop safety. The school also offers a 3-term Diesel Technology Certificate. The school has three campuses in the Pasadena area and seven extension centers that are used for workforce training, technical training and personal enrichment programs.

3. Tidewater Community College in Norfolk, VA

Tidewater Community College (TCC), one of the biggest 2-year schools in the country, offers a career studies certificate program in diesel and industrial machine repair. Available through the college's Engineering and Industrial Technology division, the program teaches students how to maintain heavy equipment and trucks. Those interested in working with boats can enroll in the marine diesel technician program.
