Two of the three schools profiled below are affiliated with the State University of New York (SUNY) and offer associate's degrees in electrical construction; students who enroll in SUNY's College of Technology at Delhi can also earn a certificate. The three featured schools also include Michigan State University, which awards a certificate in electrical technology. Some schools provide opportunities for apprenticeships and the chance for students to acquire on-the-job training. Qualified graduates may find jobs in a variety of industries, including commercial and residential construction, mining and manufacturing.

1. Alfred State SUNY College of Technology, NY

U.S. News & World Report ranked Alfred State 25th among regional colleges in the North for 2012. The college offers an Associate in Occupational Studies - Electrical Construction and Maintenance Technician. The purpose of the program is to prepare graduates for employment as designers, contractors, electrical inspectors and construction site electricians, among other positions. Courses in this program include residential and commercial wiring, lighting, alarm systems and hydraulics. Unique to the college is its project-based learning environment, through which students can pursue internship opportunities.

2. Michigan State University in East Lansing

Michigan State University ranked 71st among national universities in 2012 by U.S. News & World Report. The university offers over 200 different academic programs, including an electrical apprenticeship that trains students in agricultural, industrial, residential and commercial wiring. Students receive training in a lab equipped with state-of-the-art electrical technology used in agricultural and commercial industries. Students who complete this program receive an Electrical Technology Certificate.

3. SUNY College of Technology at Delhi, NY

In 2012, U.S. News & World Report ranked the College of Technology at Delhi 41st among regional colleges in the North. The college offers an electrical construction and maintenance certificate program which trains students to install and repair wiring in commercial and residential buildings. The certificate program takes one year to complete, and its credits are transferable to the school's associate's degree program in electrical construction and instrumentation. Courses include topics in electric code, electrical theory and math; students also participate in an electrical lab.
