1. Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI
Michigan State University is a large research university, which was established in 1855, primarily as a school for agriculture. Many other areas of study are currently offered, including psychology.
The Industrial-Organizational (I-O) psychology program stands out in that it placed number one in the 2009 U.S. News and World Report list of top I-O psychology programs, and has maintained this rank since 1999. It's a small program that, as of 2011, only has 15-20 graduate students at a time who work closely with the eight faculty members in their coursework and research (http://psychology.msu.edu). While various research specialties are available, the program emphasizes an applied approach with internships at corporations and organizations. As of 2011, half of the I-O psychology alumni have taken jobs in an applied field.
2. Pennsylvania State University - University Park
Pennsylvania State University is one of the Big Ten universities and is known for a wide range of studies. The I-O psychology program was ranked second best in the nation by U.S. News and World Report in 2009. The program offers coursework, research and seminars which cover various topics, including choosing personnel, developing training programs and assessing organizational behavior. Much of the graduate work is done in cooperation with industrial psychologists in Pennsylvania State's Smeal College of Business Administration.
3. University of Minnesota - Twin Cities in Minneapolis, MN
The Twin Cities campus is the primary campus in the University of Minnesota system, another Big Ten university with a reputation for being a highly research-oriented school. The psychology department in the College of Liberal Arts is one of the highest-rated in the U.S.
The I-O psychology program was rated number three in the nation by U.S. News and World Report in 2009. A recent study conducted by the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology placed the University of Minnesota sixth in productivity rankings as measured by publications in the top industry journals (www.siop.org). Students may obtain a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in I-O, with a variety of emphases to choose from, including personnel psychology, employee assessment and motivational behavior in the workplace.
