Jewelry design is a field of study that examines metal working techniques. Students in a metals and jewelry design program take courses in casting, stone setting, 3D design and art history. Universities may offer a Bachelor of Applied Science degree with a specialization in jewelry metalwork or a BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) or MFA (Master of Fine Arts) in metals and jewelry design.

The University of Kansas (KU) is a research institution that has campuses in Salina, Kansas City, Overland Park, Lawrence and Wichita. U.S. News and World Report ranked KU 46th on its 2012 list of 'Top Public Schools - National Universities'. KU offers an MFA in Metalsmithing and Jewelry through the School of the Arts' Department of Visual Art. Students participate in a weekly seminar to discuss issues in contemporary art. Additionally, students have access to a metal studio, which includes polishing, enameling, casting and soldering areas. A crafts area is open 24 hours a day and includes a computer lab and a supply store.
2. Rochester Institute of Technology, NY
Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), founded in 1829, is a private university that focuses on career education. The Princeton Review named RIT on its 2012 list of 'Best 376 Colleges' in the nation. RIT offers a BFA and an MFA in Metalcrafts and Jewelry. BFA students take courses in 3D design and concept drawing, as well as art history electives. Students in the 2-year MFA program write a thesis, study metal working techniques and have the opportunity to participate in a residency program at the School of American Crafts.

San Diego State University (SDSU) is a public institution that offers over 300 international education programs. U.S. News and World Report ranked SDSU 89th on its 2012 list of 'Top Public Schools - National Universities' in the U.S. SDSU's School of Art, Design and Art History offers a B.A. (Bachelor of Arts) in Applied Arts and Sciences majoring in art with a concentration in applied design specializing in jewelry and metalwork. The program focuses on increasing students' knowledge of metals, through researching issues in the fields of art and design. Students take courses in casting, stone setting and die-forming and have the opportunity to participate in a foreign exchange program.
