Education requirements for medical administrators vary according to the employer and can range from a community college certificate to a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a health care emphasis. MBA programs can be found at Duke University and Vanderbilt University, both of which are nationally ranked; Tidewater Community College offers an undergraduate certificate program.

1. Duke University in Durham, NC

Duke University is a 4-year private school that U.S. News & World Report ranked tenth among national universities in 2012, as well as 12th for its Fuqua School of Business. Fuqua's Health Sector Management MBA program is available in daytime, weekend executive, cross-continent and global executive formats. Once enrolled, students learn about health policy and law, payers and providers, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, as well as diagnostics and global health. Relatively new programs include a Master of Management in Clinical Informatics program that combines studies in information technology, business and medical topics.

2. Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN

Vanderbilt University ranked 17th among national universities by U.S. News & World Report in 2012. Through the Owen Graduate School of Management, students can pursue a Master of Management in Health Care. This 1-year program includes courses in finance and accounting, health care industry economics, marketing, operations and leadership. Students enrolled in the MBA program can also choose a specialization in health care.

3. Tidewater Community College in Norfolk, VA

Tidewater Community College (TCC) is a 2-year public school that offers a 3-semester medical office administration certificate program. Required coursework includes topics in medical terminology, legal issues, coding and insurance. TCC's 3-semester medical assisting program covers administrative and clinical topics. Both programs offer internship opportunities.
