After completing medical school, doctors train in specialized areas, such as internal medicine, pediatrics, emergency medicine, surgery or oncology, to name a few. This period of training is called a residency, which typically takes place at an academic hospital or medical center and can last 3-7 years. Top schools offering residency programs are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

1. Harvard University in Boston, MA

Although Harvard Medical School does not have its own teaching hospital, it is affiliated with 17 hospitals and medical centers, including Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), which is the oldest hospital affiliated with Harvard Medical School. Harvard's internal medicine residency program is affiliated with six hospitals, including MGH. The internal medicine program at Harvard was ranked number one by U.S. News & World Report in 2012. Other residency programs at Harvard Medical School include orthopedics, psychiatry, radiation oncology and plastic surgery.

2. University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA

The University of Pennsylvania boasts being the oldest U.S. medical school with a teaching hospital. U.S. News & World Report ranked the university's Perelman School of Medicine number one in pediatrics in 2012. The pediatric residency program offers 19 subspecialties taught by national and international specialists in their fields. Emergency medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, internal medicine and ophthalmology are just a few of the other residency programs offered. Students serve their residencies at hospitals including the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Hospital, Pennsylvania Presbyterian Medical Center and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

3. University of Washington in Seattle, WA

The University of Washington offers over 92 medical residency and clinical fellowship programs, including one in family medicine. According to U.S. News & World Report in 2012, the family medicine program is the number one program in the country. To fulfill its commitment to working with underserved communities in the Pacific Northwest region, family resident residents staff two full-service medical clinics in Seattle.
