School Overview

A bachelor's degree in a relevant field of study is usually required to obtain a position as a software engineer; higher-level management positions may require a graduate degree. Undergraduate programs in software engineering can be found at the Milwaukee School of Engineering, Michigan Technological University and Florida Institute of Technology; the latter is the only one of the three to offer a graduate degree in the same area. In the past, both the Milwaukee School of Engineering and Michigan Technological University have received high rankings from U.S. News & World Report for the quality of their engineering programs. In addition to developing strong problem-solving and analytical skills, successful completion of a program may lead to a career in the defense, aerospace, manufacturing or automotive industries.

Top U.S. Schools with Software Engineering Programs

1. Milwaukee School of Engineering in Milwaukee, WI

The Milwaukee School of Engineering was ranked 11th on U.S. News & World Report's list of schools with the best undergraduate engineering programs for 2011. The school's Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Software Engineering program has been approved by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), one of the first four programs in the U.S. to receive this distinction. Once enrolled, students learn how to develop video games, mobile applications and network systems for major organizations. At this time, the Milwaukee School of Engineering does not offer a graduate program in software engineering.

2. Michigan Technological University in Houghton, MI

Michigan Technological University is a public school that ranked 74th for its undergraduate engineering programs, according to U.S. News & World Report in 2011. Through the university's Department of Computer Science, students can earn a B.S. in Software Engineering. Learning outcomes include the ability to operate large-scale computer software networks for defense systems and businesses. While the university does not offer graduate degrees specifically in software engineering, students can pursue a Master of Science or a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Computer Science.

3. Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, FL

The Florida Institute of Technology, also referred to as Florida Tech, is a private research school that U.S. News & World Report ranked 156th for its undergraduate engineering program in 2011.
