School Information

The three regionally-ranked schools profiled below offer programs in surveying engineering or technology, which can lead to a certificate or degree. Both Ferris State University and St. Cloud State University offer bachelor's degrees in surveying, which is the minimum educational requirement for obtaining a surveyor's license in all 50 states and Washington. D.C. An associate degree is sufficient in some states, such as Pennsylvania. In addition to learning how to determine air, land or water boundaries, surveying students find out how to write descriptions for legal documents, such as leases and deeds.

Top U.S. Schools with Surveying Programs

1. Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport, PA

U.S. News & World Report ranked the Pennsylvania College of Technology 36th among the best regional colleges in the North in 2012. An affiliate of Pennsylvania State University, Penn College offers an Associate of Applied Science in Surveying Technology program, which prepares students for the state's Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) licensing exam. The program has been approved by ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) and includes courses in construction and topographic surveying, hydraulics, photogrammetry and statistics. Students also take classes in physics and train in the use of computer applications.

2. Ferris State University in Big Rapids, MI

Ferris State University was ranked 72nd among Midwestern regional universities in 2012 by U.S. News & World Report. The university offers several options for students interested in pursuing a career in surveying, including certificate, Associate of Applied Science and ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science in Surveying Engineering programs. Students take courses in advanced surveying, remote sensing, adjustment computations and geodesy.

3. St. Cloud State University in Saint Cloud, MN

St. Cloud State University is the second-largest university in the state and was ranked 81st among the best regional universities in the Midwest by U.S. News & World Report in 2012. The university offers an ABET-approved Bachelor of Science in Land Surveying and Mapping Sciences program and an undergraduate certificate program in land surveying. Courses include geodetic surveying, boundary law and urban site development. Students also participate in a surveying internship.
