1. University of Alaska - Anchorage

This public institution, located in Anchorage, features a many community campuses. It was founded in 1954. For 2011, this university was ranked 75th on U.S. News and World Report's list for best regional universities in the West.

At this university's community and technical college, an Associate of Applied Science program is available in welding and nondestructive testing technology. Once they complete the training program, students can look for jobs in such industries as construction, manufacturing and transportation. Entering these industries will give graduates the opportunity to land entry-level technician jobs. The main curriculum here consists of examining metallic structures and components and learning the main welding processes. Also learned here are the three main thermal cutting procedures.

2. Utah State University in Logan, UT

A certificate of completion is awarded to students who complete their studies in the school's welding program. Courses within this program include trade mathematics, shielded metal arc wielding, metallurgy and weld inspection. This certificate program is offered through the school's Professional and Applied Technology Education Division.

3. University of Alaska - Fairbanks

The University of Alaska, located in Fairbanks (UAF)s, is known for its extensive research into the physical and social factors of the Far North. It was listed on U.S. News and World Report's 2011 list for best national universities, Tier 2.

The welding program found at UAF is geared towards beginners looking to learn the basics of cutting and welding.
