Top Schools with Alternative Medical Support Programs
An article appeared in US News & World on April 12, 2011 stating that the field of alternative medicine is rapidly expanding. Fields of study include herbal therapy, vitamin and mineral therapy, acupuncture, massage therapy and chiropractic manipulation. Levels of education vary from earning occupational certificates and associate and master's degrees to doctoral degrees. Compiled here are schools that reflect the variety of education possibilities in alternative medicine.
1. Boulder College of Massage Therapy, CO
The Boulder College of Massage Therapy, in business for 35 years, is a private nonprofit institution. A massage therapy certificate takes between nine to 15 months to complete. The school offers advanced certificates in six areas, including sports & orthopedic massage and prenatal, labor, and postpartum massage. An associate degree in occupation studies in massage therapy includes six months of evening classes and electives (120 hours). Core classes include clinical massage, craniosacral therapy, traumatic events and self-care.
2. Red Rock Community College, Lakewood, CO
Red Rock Community College offers a certificate and associate degree in holistic health where students learn about various complementary healing techniques. Students take courses in herbology, aromatherapy, Jin Shin, dance therapy, meditation, journaling and personal coaching. The college also offers a certificate in reflexology and classes in minerals and crystals, Reiki, stress management, art and healing, aromatherapy and healing touch.
3. Bastyr University in Kenmore, WA
Bastyr University offers a Bachelor of Science majoring in herbal sciences. With students attending classes full-time, they can complete the program in two years. The curriculum prepares students for graduate work in pharmacology, nutrition, acupuncture and oriental medicine. Students with a major in herbal sciences may find employment in the cosmetics industry, as well as quality assurance specialists in the vitamin and mineral supplement business. This degree does not qualify students to treat patients.
