The Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University offers a Master of Science in Foreign Service that was ranked #1 in the nation by Foreign Policy magazine in 2009 and listed as a Foreign Policy Association (FPA) top school for international relations. The master's program includes concentrations in international relations and security, development and commerce, and students have the option of creating their own international relations specialty.

2. Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, DC

The School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), part of Johns Hopkins University, is located next to the Center for Global Development in the heart of the nation's capital. SAIS had the country's second best international relations master's program in 2009, according to Foreign Policy magazine, and like Georgetown, it was named by the FPA as a top international relations school. SAIS offers a Master of Arts in International Relations, which includes a general study of the field. Students who would like a more-focused program can complete a master's in international relations with a concentration in conflict management, law and policy, or a Ph.D. in a subject such as global theory and history, strategic studies and international law.
