Top Structural Engineering Graduate Programs: List of Schools
Structural engineering is a field of study that could be offered through a civil engineering program. Students in a graduate structural engineering program take courses in design and applied mathematics, as well as conduct research in various fields, such as earthquake engineering. Several schools offer an M.S. (Master of Science) and a Ph.D. in the field of structural engineering.
Top Structural Engineering Graduate Schools
1. Stanford University, CA
Stanford University is comprised of seven graduate schools, including the School of Engineering and the School of Earth Sciences. Forbes ranked Stanford fifth on its 2011 list of America's Top Colleges, and U.S. News & World Report placed its graduate engineering school at #2 that year. The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department offers M.S. degrees in structural engineering and geomechanics. Alternatively, those more interested in research could pursue the engineering or Ph.D. programs that combine the two disciplines. Students conduct research in the areas of design construction integration and sensing, earthquake engineering and health monitoring.
2. The University of California - San Diego in La Jolla
The University of California San Diego was ranked as the 37th best university in the U.S. in 2012 by U.S. News & World Report, which also ranked its engineering school #14 in 2011. The Jacobs School of Engineering offers an M.S. in Structural Engineering with an optional concentration in health monitoring. The school also includes a Ph.D. program in structural engineering. Possible areas of focus in the doctoral program include earthquake engineering, finite elements, geotechnical engineering and solid mechanics.
3. The University of Texas at Austin
The University of Texas at Austin was listed as the 45th best college in the U.S. in 2012 by U.S. News & World Report, and it's undergraduate and graduate engineering programs were all included in the top 20 in 2011. The Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Department offers master's and doctoral programs in structural engineering and materials. The structural engineering programs emphasize analysis, performance and design, while the materials programs focus on development, restoration and forensics of construction materials.
