San Diego Mesa College
San Diego Mesa College is a public school located in Clairemont, a neighborhood in the northern part of San Diego. With an annual student population of more than 23,000 individuals, the institution is the largest community college in the area. It offers Associate of Science, Associate of Arts and certificate programs in vocational as well as academic fields of study.
The School of Health Sciences and Public Service is divided into the three departments: consumer and family studies, hospitality and culinary arts or allied health. The latter department offers six programs for aspiring technicians and assistants in the areas of animal health, health information, general medicine, dentistry, physical therapy and radiology.
Medical Assisting Programs
Certificate of Achievement in Medical Assisting
Students prepare to pass certifying examinations given by the California Certifying Board of Medical Assistants (CCBMA) and the American Medical Technologists (AMT). They train to perform both clinical and administrative duties in a healthcare facility. The program takes two semesters to complete and includes courses in medical office management, patient care principles, business principles, phlebotomy, directed clinical practice, human anatomy and physiology, medical ethics, human behavior, medical terminology and diagnostic testing. Students are also required to complete a directed clinical practice component at a local medical facility.
Associate in Science in Medical Assisting
Individuals need only complete the certificate of achievement program in medical assisting to qualify for national and state certification. However, a 2-year degree program in medical assisting can help medical assistants compete for jobs. In addition to completing 30 core medical assisting credits, students in this program are also required to complete general education courses and a directed clinical practice experience.
