Tuition for Electrical Engineering Graduate Schools: Average Costs
Graduate schools offer both master's degrees and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering. Tuition, fees and credit requirements vary by school and degree. Read on for a comparison of program costs at various public and private 4-year universities.
What is the Average Cost for Electrical Engineering Graduate School?
Factors such as the degree level (master's or doctoral), the program length, the student's state of residence and whether the school is public or private influence the tuition price for a graduate program in electrical engineering. Additionally, a tuition figure alone doesn't reflect the full cost of a program, since electrical engineering education often requires extra technology fees. Tuition and fees fluctuate yearly; examples of program costs in 2010 are listed below.
Electrical Engineering Master's Degree Costs
University of Alabama at Birmingham
The University of Alabama at Birmingham, a public school, offers a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering (M.S.E.E.). The program requires a minimum of 33 semester hours beyond a bachelor's degree and offers both a thesis and a non-thesis option.
The school listed its tuition as $5,144 per 2-semester year for state resident students and $11,480 for out-of-state students in 2010. The fees were based on a 12-credit-hour course load per semester.
Santa Clara University
Santa Clara University, a private school, also offers an M.S.E.E. The program requires at least 45 units and does not require a thesis, although students may choose to do one and receive up to nine units of credit for it. The tuition was $710 per unit plus $135 per quarter for engineering course fees in 2010.
University of Pennsylvania
The M.S.E.E. program at the private University of Pennsylvania requires ten course units, with each course counting as one credit unit. This program also does not require a thesis and offers two course unit credits for students who complete one electively.
The tuition per credit unit was $4,804 in 2010, plus a general fee and a technology fee. The general and technology fees increased with the number of courses being taking per semester, as follows:
|Credit Unit||General Fee||Technology Fee|
Electrical Engineering Ph.D. Costs
University of Louisville
The electrical engineering Ph.D. program at the University of Louisville requires a minimum of 48 semester hours, including 18 hours for dissertation. Tuition at this public school was $508 per semester hour for residents and $1,057 for non-residents in 2010.
Polytechnic Institute of New York University
Students with a bachelor's degree can earn a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from New York University's private Polytechnic Institute with 75 credits. Students holding a Master of Science can earn their Ph.D. with 45 credits. The school requires 21 credits of dissertation research.
In 2010, graduate tuition was $1,194 per credit. The school also charges institute fees each semester. These fees were $580 for full-time students and $204-$385 for part-time students.
University of Pennsylvania
The University of Pennsylvania offers a doctoral program in electrical and systems engineering. The program requires 20 course units in addition to a research proposal exam and a thesis defense. The tuition, general fees and technology fees for the Ph.D. program were the same as listed above for the master's program.
