About the University of Maryland in Adelphi, MD
As one of 11 universities that make up the University System of Maryland, the University of Maryland University College (UMUC) is the largest public university in the U.S. today. Originally founded in 1947, UMUC had an active enrollment of over 42,000 students in the 2011-2012 school year.
While the school is headquartered in Adelphi, UMUC also provides educational offerings via classroom locations in Washington, D.C., Europe and Asia. In the 1990s, UMUC pioneered the use of the Internet for higher education when it became the first university in the U.S. to offer online degrees. Today, the school facilitates distance learning and education to students and military members in more than 150 locations throughout the world.
The University of Maryland offers over 100 academic programs through its two academic schools. At the undergraduate level, students may choose among a variety of degree options ranging from business administration and management to information science and psychology. Additional learning opportunities include teacher certification, weekend and evening college, and distance learning options.
The school offers students ways to earn college credits beyond the classroom as well. For instance, credit may be earned for prior learning. Credit for new learning in the workplace may also be granted to students who acquire new skills while on the job. Finally, students may receive credit for industry-standard certifications they have earned through organizations, such as Microsoft, Cisco, and CompTIA.
Over 42,700 students were enrolled in UMUC in the fall of 2011. Prospective freshmen seeking admission are required to have completed high school or a GED with qualifying scores that are dependent upon when the test was originally taken. The school requires that transfer students have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better for all academic work completed at other regionally accredited colleges.
There is an application fee, which may be submitted online. Prior graduates of other U.S. colleges or universities automatically qualify for admission to UMUC. The undergraduate class that entered UMUC in the fall of 2011 consisted of 53% females and about 82% of all undergraduates were 25 years of age or older. Around 80% of undergraduate students attended the university part-time as of fall 2011.
