Utah General Information

Brigham Young University is the most well-known school in Utah. In fact, it is the top college in the state with over 34,000 students. As a religious college, it attracts members of the Mormon Church from across the country and around the world. Utah also has many secular colleges as well, including the University of Utah, Weber State and Utah State. There are a 61 college campuses in the state. You can earn a bachelor's degree at 17 of them and nine schools offer advanced degrees.

1. Brigham Young University

Brigham Young University is the largest of the top colleges and universities in Utah. It was founded in 1875 by Brigham Young, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. BYU seeks to provide an outstanding education in an atmosphere consistent with the ideals and principles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The school enrolls more 34,000 students in one of 188 academic programs. Top programs at BYU include languages and performing arts.

2. University of Utah

The University of Utah is another one of Utah's top colleges and universities. It is located in the state capital, Salt Lake City, and enrolls more than 30,000 students. The school offers 77 undergraduate majors, 70 minors and certificate programs, 40 teaching degrees and 95 graduate programs. The University of Utah offers the states only program in meteorology and geophysics and a nationally ranked pharmacy program.

3. Utah Valley State College

Utah Valley State College is located in Orem and is another one of Utah's top colleges and universities. It consists of five academic schools that offer 54 degrees. The top degrees at Utah Valley State College are business, education, psychology and commercial piloting. The school will change its name to Utah Valley University in July 2008.

4. Weber State University

Weber State University is another one of Utah's top universities. It is located in Ogden and offers students a wide variety of academic programs. The four-year college was founded in 1889 and enrolls more than 18,000 students in one of 215 degree and certificate programs - the largest offering in the state. WSU is divided into seven different academic colleges: the College of Applied Science & Technology, the College of Arts & Humanities, John B Goddard School of Business & Economics, Moyes College of Education, Dumke College of Health Profession, the College of Science and the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences.

5. Utah State University

Another one of the top colleges and universities in Utah is Utah State University, located in the city of Logan. This four-year institution started as a small agricultural college in 1888 and has evolved into a college that is nationally recognized for its technical leadership in land, water, space and human development programs. Utah State has more than 14,000 registered students enrolled in one of 200 major programs. USU is divided into seven different academic colleges: College of Agriculture, College of Business, College of Education & Human Services, College of Engineering, College of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences, College of Natural Resources and the College of Science.
