Veterinarian Technician Certificate

The Veterinarian Technician Certificate program is designed to teach students how to provide fundamental healthcare for animals. Students learn the proper techniques to perform veterinary technician duties, such as those applicable to dental cleanings or assistance during surgery. Although there are no prerequisites for the program, Modesto Junior College does recommend that students have experience working in a veterinarian's office before enrolling. If the student does not have prior experience, the school assists them in finding work experience through their personal internship program before beginning their course studies. Several local clinics participate and students are accepted for internships twice a year. Students will need to complete at least three years of work experience in addition to the program's courses before they can pass the state veterinary technician licensing exam.

In addition to gaining hands-on experience, students are required to take 17 hours of coursework, which is designed to be completed in one year. Students can expect to take courses such as veterinary medical terminology, veterinary equipment and safety, animal health and sanitation, emergency procedures and veterinary office procedures. Additionally, there are prerequisite courses that must also be completed, including biology, composition, pre-algebra and chemistry. Once all of the prerequisites and coursework is completed, with a grade of C or better, students earn a certificate of completion.
