Historically Black Colleges With Psychology Programs
Overview of Psychology Programs Offered at Historically Black Colleges
Many historically black colleges offer degree programs in psychology. Just like other colleges and universities nationwide, psychology programs at historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are offered at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. These programs are no different than those offered at any other college, although some may emphasize black psychology or multiculturalism.
According to a 2004 issue of Black Issues in Higher Education, three of the top five schools that produced African American psychology graduates were HBCUs. These colleges included Florida A&M University at number one on the list, Hampton University at number three on the list, and Howard University at number five on the list. In May 2007, Diverse: Issues in Higher Education cited Florida A&M's psychology department as being the nation's number two producer of African American psychology graduates at the undergraduate level, as compared to all U.S. colleges and universities. The following month, the Tallahassee Democrat named Florida A&M's psychology department as number one among psychology departments at historically black colleges.
Florida A&M University
Florida A&M's psychology department offers a major and minor in psychology. Course topics at the undergraduate level include applied psychology, personality, social psychology and black psychology.
The department also offers coursework that leads to a Master of Science in Community Psychology and an Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) degree in school psychology. The master's degree requires a thesis and offers supervised field experience in settings with a multicultural emphasis. The Ed.S. program also carries a multicultural emphasis and prepares students to diagnose and treat academic and behavioral problems in school children.
Students can also participate in organizations relevant to the field of psychology. For example, students can join the Student Circle of the Association of Black Psychologists (www.abpsi.org). The association addresses mental health needs in the African American community. It also provides regional and national networking opportunities for students.
Hampton University
Hampton University's psychology department offers a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. The degree is one of the school's most popular majors. Some courses in this program cover the essentials of psychology, abnormal and developmental psychology, personality and statistics. Field studies and internships are also available to help students develop clinical and applied research skills.
Additionally, students can choose electives from any area within the university to tailor the program to their needs. For example, students interested in going to medical, law or dental school can choose from courses in biology, chemistry or public policy to help them fulfill entry requirements.
Howard University
Howard University offers a Bachelor of Science that lets students who show a high level of academic potential gain entry into the Ph.D. program. Courses in the bachelor's degree program cover cognition, personality theory, research methods and statistics. Howard University doesn't offer a terminal master's degree. Rather, students must earn their master's degree through the Ph.D. program. The master's degree program has a clinical psychology focus. Other graduate-level concentrations include:
- Cognitive psychology
- Developmental psychology
- Experimental psychology
- Neuropsychology
- Personality
- Physiological psychology
- Social psychology
