Wildlife & Forestry Conservation: Online Diploma
Learn about online diploma programs in wildlife and forestry conservation. Get information on course topics, job prospects and continuing education options to make an informed decision about your future.
Wildlife and forestry conservation is not an academic field that's often studied through online education programs, although there are a couple distance learning diploma programs available. These programs introduce students to common management techniques for birds, mammals, fish, rangelands and forests. They don't require any in-person fieldwork or practical training.
Graduates from an online program may be able to obtain entry-level employment as forestry and conservation workers, though they'll likely receive on-the-job training. Individuals who would like to eventually move into higher-level positions, like as conservation scientists or conservation managers, may consider on-campus or online degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Overview of Online Diploma in Wildlife and Forestry Conservation
Since working in wildlife and forestry conservation typically requires hands-on experience, very few programs are available online in this field. However, there are some opportunities available. Through an online diploma in wildlife and forestry conservation, participants explore the birds, mammals, waterfowl and fish that live in different habitats. They also study techniques for managing the animal populations and regenerating deteriorating plant and animal life.
Program Information and Requirements
Through online diplomas in wildlife and forestry conservation, students receive the lessons, books and other equipment in the mail. An online component to the program allows them to get help and answers to their questions. Some courses also have optional online activities. Campus visits aren't required. The program has no specific length, since students complete the lessons entirely on their own time, but they can finish it in as little as five months.
List of Common Wildlife and Forestry Conservation Courses
Certificates have no general education requirements. Instead, every lesson pertains directly to wildlife and forestry conservation, preparing students for their future careers through practical, real-world lessons.
Bird Wildlife Management
In this course, participants study bird reproduction, ways to monitor the population and restock it if the population gets too low. They also analyze the biological makeup of bird families, including those that live on the water.
Large Mammal Management
Learners identify different wildlife lands and learn how to improve the habitat for large mammals. They classify large mammals, learn how to manage the population size and explore potential legal issues.
In this learning module, participants explore rangelands and forests, ways to control vegetation and methods for stocking and monitoring animal life. The course also covers materials for maintaining the health of the habitats, such as preventing deforestation and over-harvesting.
Issues in Conservation
This course addresses international issues that conservation officers and forest workers face on a regular basis. It also covers the role of the forest worker and ways to be safe while working in the forest or other wildlife habitat.
Career Information for Graduates
With this certificate, graduates can work in national parks as facility operators, wildlife population managers or forest and conservation workers. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projected that, between 2008 and 2018, the employment of forest and conservation workers would increase by nine percent (www.bls.gov). As of May 2010, the median annual salary for forest and conservation workers was $23,900, according to the BLS.
Continuing Education Information
Individuals who are interested in additional career opportunities or in continuing their studies can earn an online associate's or master's degree program in wildlife and forest conservation or forestry. Campus-based programs are also available at the associate's, bachelor's and master's degree levels. With additional training, graduates can move to management positions or become conservation scientists or foresters.
