Programs at Atlanta Technical College

Atlanta Technical College has HVAC training programs that lead to diplomas or certificates. The air conditioning technology program focuses on air conditioning technology along with air conditioning and heating installation. Individuals wishing to apply to these programs must be high school graduates and at least 16 years of age.

Heating and Air Conditioning Installation Technician Certificate

Students in the heating and air conditioning certificate program learn a variety of refrigeration, heating and electrical system concepts. This program consists of three courses and covers refrigeration tools, piping practices, voltage circuits, AC and DC theory, system wiring and installation procedures.

Air Conditioning Technician Assistant Certificate

The air conditioning technician assistant certificate program prepares students to work alongside professional air conditioning technicians. Students learn basic air conditioning concepts through courses in refrigeration fundamentals, proper cooling practices and air conditioning system components. Topics covered include leak testing, service valves, refrigerant recovery, compressors, metering devices, pressure and temperature relationships and safety procedures.

Air Conditioning Technology Diploma

This diploma program can prepare students for careers as air conditioning technicians. Students learn advanced air conditioning and ventilation concepts through courses in refrigeration principles and practices, electric control systems, industrial safety, computer use in air conditioning, gas heating systems and troubleshooting air conditioning systems. The program combines classroom instruction with practical training opportunities. Students also complete three basic skills courses.

Air Conditioning Technology Diploma

The air conditioning diploma program trains students to become air conditioning technicians. This program combines basic courses in mathematics, science and communication with specialized instruction in refrigeration concepts. Courses include air conditioning systems installation and system troubleshooting, heat pumps, gas heat and HVACR electrical motors. The program requires 51 credit hours.

Air Conditioning Technician's Assistant Certificate

Course topics include HVAC electrical motors, components and controls, refrigeration principles, AC systems application and installation, gas heat, heat pumps and troubleshooting AC systems.

Associate of Applied Science in Air Conditioning Technology

Students seeking this associate degree program are required to complete 66 credits of coursework. The program includes five general education courses to go along with the air conditioning curriculum. Air conditioning courses include refrigeration system components, troubleshooting AC systems, commercial refrigeration design and gas heat. This program can teach students how to test, repair and maintain HVAC systems.
