Comparison of Atlanta Medical Institutes

Morehouse School of Medicine offers graduate-level degree programs in a research-oriented setting. Morehouse is renown for its social mission of improving the health of communities, with an emphasis on underserved urban and rural populations and people of color. Emory University has distinguished itself with its academic excellence in medicine and for it's biomedical research. Degrees at Morehouse School of Medicine

Morehouse offers graduate programs in medicine and medical-based research. Students wishing to attend any of the degree programs offered at Morehouse school of medicine must generally have a bachelor's degree from an accredited school. Morehouse requires excellent academic achievement with a major in the natural sciences such as biology, chemistry or physics for admission. Since this is a research-oriented institution, many of the degree programs focus heavily on research. Therefore, master's and PhD candidates have the opportunity to participate in laboratory rotations on-campus, developing their research skills.

Master of Public Health

This program trains students to address large-scale medical issues among large populations, including AIDS and malnutrition. Classes in environmental health, public health, biostatistics, epidemiology and other topics are featured in the degree program. Extensive individualized work within a student's chosen specialization and the attempted publication of a thesis or manuscript are required.

Master of Science in Clinical Research

This graduate program is designed to prepare students for a career in clinical research. The training covers the principles and methods of biostatistics, epidemiology, ethics and health services research. This program is part of the Clinical Research Center operated by the school.

Master of Science in Biomedical Technology

MSBT students learn a foundation in biomedical science and receive advanced training in discrete biotechnologies. This program develops technical expertise in biomedical research methods and instrumentation. Students spend a great deal of time in labs applying the principles learned in the classroom courses in biochemistry, cell and tissue structure, the fundamentals of professional science and biomedical sciences. Students serve a biotechnology apprenticeship in the second year.

Master of Science in Biomedical Research

In the MSBR program, students take foundational courses in biology and learn the tools used by research scientists. This two-year program includes courses covering biochemistry and cell and tissue structure with labs, as well as fundamentals of professional science and participation in laboratory rotations. In the second year, students select a specialty and conduct their thesis research.

Master of Science in Medical Sciences

The MSMS program is intended to provide enhanced credentials for students who are planning to enter medical school. This non-thesis program includes graduate-level courses in anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, epidemiology and public health. It includes classroom studies in medical terminology, neurobiology, pharmacology, medical microbiology, biostatistics and community health. The program also provides a course in critical thinking which is designed to assist with improving performance on the MCAT.

Doctor of Medicine

Applicants to the MD program must complete one year each of biology, chemistry, organic chemistry and physics, all with labs in their undergraduate program, as well as college-level mathematics and English. Students begin to obtain clinical experience in their first year of medical school by participating in clinical preceptorships. This training is continued in the National Center for Primary Care lab located on campus. Basic coursework covers biochemistry, histology and cell biology, embryology, physiology, anatomy and neurobiology. Students also learn pharmacology, epidemiology, toxicology, pathology and organ systems. During the third year, students participate in clerkships in internal medicine, pediatrics, OB/GYN, psychiatry, surgery and family medicine.

Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Sciences

This program is designed for graduates to become scientists knowledgeable about human biology and disease. Students take graduate-level courses in biochemistry, cell and tissue structure, organs and systems, biomedical genetics and labs associated with these courses, as well as learning the fundamentals of professional science and biomedical sciences. Beginning the second year, students begin research into their dissertations. After four years of advanced coursework, laboratory rotations and research, students generally complete their dissertations in the fifth year.

Dual Degree Programs

Morehouse also offers several dual degree programs including MD/PhD in biomedical sciences involving individualized advanced curriculum that provides specialized research training to fulfill PhD requirements while students obtain their MD. The MD/MSC or and MSC/PhD programs offers specialized research training to students who are enrolled at Emory, Morehouse and Georgia Tech. This unique program provides PhD candidates with the training needed for careers in clinical and/or transitional research. The school also offers an MD/MPH dual degree.

Residency Programs

The Office of Graduate Medical Education sponsors seven residency programs in family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, psychiatry, public health and preventative medicine and general surgery. Residents train at Grady Memorial Hospital and several area community medical locations. The residency programs are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Degrees at Emory University

Emory University School of Medicine is one of the leading medical institutions in biomedical research and medical education. It provides degree programs in medical imaging, anesthesiology, human genetics, physician assistant, physical therapy and medicine. The school also offers a range of dual degree programs, pairing off medical specialties with master's degrees in public health or bioethics. It is also noted for its MD/PhD program training tomorrow's physician scientists.

Bachelor of Medical Science in Medical Imaging

Medical imaging involves x-rays and other energy forms to create diagnostic images with specialized radiographic equipment. Since medical imaging requires knowledge of anatomy, students take anatomy and physiology courses as well as learning medical terminology. Students also learn patient care, imaging procedures and the technology associated with medical imaging and processing. They also participate in clinical internships or practicums each semester.

Master of Medical Science in Anesthesiology

Students who hold bachelor's degrees in pre-medicine or fields that included prerequisite pre-med courses can enroll in this intensive two-year program. Courses cover pharmacology, administering anesthetics, use of anesthetic technologies and monitoring patient's vital signs among other topics. Students participate in clinical rotations in the first year. During the last three semesters, students participate in clinical rotations full-time in all anesthesia specialty areas. Graduates are qualified to sit for the national Certifying Examination for Anesthesiologist Assistants.

Master of Medical Science in Human Genetics and Genetic Counseling

Emory University's 22.5-month genetic counseling training program is in its second year and has provisional accreditation from the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC). Students are trained in the science of genetics and counseling in genetics. Courses cover theory and application of genetics related to reproduction, pediatrics, newborns, cancer and other medical specialties. The program accepts ten students a year. Graduates are qualified to sit for the ABGC certification examination. The program is housed with the Department of Human Genetics which also provides internships in genetic counseling.

Master of Medical Science in Physician Assistant

Admission to Emory's 29-month physician assistant program is highly competitive. The school prefers to accept students who have demonstrated academic excellence in their undergraduate degree programs and who have some healthcare experience. The PA program includes fundamentals and essentials courses in epidemiology, biostatistics, as well as diagnosis and treatment related to all medical practice specialties. Students are also schooled in physician assistant practices, ethics and patient assessment. Graduates are qualified to sit for the NCCPA-PA National Certification examination.

Master of Medical Science in Physician Assistant with Public Health

This is a dual degree program provided in collaboration with the Rollins School of Public Health. Students wishing to enter this program must apply to and be accepted in both programs. The first year, students complete 32 semester hours in the school of Public Health, taking the required MPH core courses, required department courses and completing a thesis and a practicum. Then students participate in seven semesters of PA courses and clinical rotations. This program can be completed in three years.

Doctor of Physical Therapy

In this 35-month program, students begin by learning the normal structure, function and movement of the human body across the lifespan. Students learn human anatomy, how to measure movement, kinesiology and biomechanics, physiology and neuroscience. Studies progress to pathophysiology and diseases and rehabilitation. Principles learned in the classroom are integrated into the student's clinical work. Students participate in 36 weeks of full time clinical internships as a graduation requirement. They must also complete a research project and fulfill electives. Graduates are qualified to sit for state physical therapist licensure examinations. The Division of Physical Therapy also offers orthopedic residencies.

Doctor of Physical Therapy with Public Health

Within the first year of enrollment, students must apply to and be admitted to both the DPT program and the MPH program. The first two years of this dual degree program will be spent in the DPT program. Students fulfill the MPH program requirements in the third year. In the fourth year, students return to the DPT program to complete the doctor of physical therapy degree requirements.

Doctor of Medicine

This program starts out with students shadowing doctors for a week after which they spend four months studying healthy human physiology. As they progress to studying human diseases, students also participate in outpatient clinic rotations every other week for the next 12 months, also completing their anatomy lab during this time. In the next phase, students apply what they've learned in the classroom and in the lab by participating in clinical rotations in surgery, medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology and radiology. They also do outpatient rotations in a variety of medical specialties. Students are then expected to conduct a research project - the discovery phase of the program - that combines their interests in other areas with their medical research. Finally, students participate in senior rotations concluding with a capstone course designed to assist with transition from student to practicing medical resident.

Doctor of Medicine with Public Health

This dual degree program is designed to prepare students for a medical or administrative career in public health. The program takes five years to complete. Admission to the MPH degree program depends upon the student's academic standing and professional conduct in the first three years of the MD program. The student's fourth year is spent in the MPH program, which satisfies the discovery requirement in the MD program. The fifth year is spent fulfilling the unfinished MD requirements.

Doctor of Medicine with Bioethics

This dual degree program provides graduates with expertise related to ethical issues in clinical practice. Admission to the bioethics degree program depends upon the student's conduct and academic standing in the first three years of the medical program. This program will replace the five-month discovery phase in the medical program. This dual degree adds a year to the MD program.

Doctor of Medicine with Clinical Research

As with the other dual degree programs, this program replaces the discovery phase in the MD program. The clinical research portion is 28 academic credit hours including classes, research thesis and a written grant proposal. Medical students can apply to this program early in the third year of medical school. Acceptance depends upon their academic standing and conduct in the first three years of medical school.

Doctor of Medicine/Doctor of Philosophy

This is an in-depth, dual degree program combining clinical medicine education with biomedical research training. This program requires students to complete the first two years of medical school, after which they will engage in several years of graduate study in the life science area of their interest. Once they have fulfilled the PhD degree requirements, they will complete the MD requirements with the third and fourth years of medical school to graduate with an MD./PhD degree.
