Miami Schools with Auto Mechanic Programs

Students interested in automotive training in the Miami area can find postsecondary classes and certificate programs at three adult and career technical education centers that are part of Miami-Dade Public Schools.

  • The Robert Morgan Education Center is located in on the south side of Miami and offers certificate and degree programs in automotive technology.

These two schools offer certificate programs in automotive service technology:

  • Lindsey Hopkins Technical Education Center is located close to the center of Miami.
  • Miami Lakes Educational Center is located north of Miami in the Miami Lakes area.

All three schools are approved by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) to provide automotive mechanics training.

Robert Morgan Educational Center

The Robert Morgan Educational Center provides adult and postsecondary education to Miami area students. Individuals can find programs in fields such as welding, commercial art technology, culinary arts and HVAC. This school also offers three distinct automotive service technology curriculum tracks that can help prepare students to work as professional auto mechanics.

Automotive Service Technology Certificate

The automotive service technology certificate program prepares students to take the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification exam by providing training in each of the eight areas of ASE testing. These areas include engine repair, manual drive train and axles, automatic transmission, suspension and steering, electrical and electronic systems, brakes, heating and air conditioning and engine performance. Students must complete 1,800 hours of program training to earn the certificate.

Heavy Duty Truck and Bus Mechanic Certificate

This program is geared towards those interested in repair and maintenance of buses and trucks. To meet certificate requirements, students must complete 1,800 hours of program training. Students learn how to repair and maintain engines, brakes, hydraulics and heating and air conditioning in heavy-weight diesel vehicles. Graduates may pursue careers as diesel engine mechanics, drive train technicians or repair and maintenance technicians.

Associate of Science in Advanced Automotive Technology (Honda PACT)

The Honda Professional Automotive Career Training (PACT) program is designed to train automotive technicians specializing in Honda and Acura automobiles. The 2-year PACT program culminates in both a vocational certificate and an associate degree. The technical curriculum is provided and consistently updated by American Honda to ensure that students receive the most up-to-date training materials. Graduates typically find employment at Honda dealerships or service centers.

Lindsey Hopkins Technical Education Center

Lindsey Hopkins Technical Education Center was the first vocational school to be established in Miami-Dade County. The school provides professional training and development to interested students in the city. Students will find an auto mechanic program that is designed to train them for a career in automotive technology.

Automotive Service Technology Certificate

The automotive service technology program is meant to prepare students to take ASE certification tests. Students learn engine repair, transmission and steering systems, brake systems repair and maintenance, electrical systems and engine performance. In addition to automotive repair and maintenance skills, students learn safe work practices, communication skills and management concepts. To complete the program, students must demonstrate proficiency in 10th grade math and 9th grade reading comprehension. Graduates may be employed as auto mechanics, automotive lube technicians, automotive service assistants and engine repair technicians.

Miami Lakes Educational Center

Located approximately 17 miles north of downtown Miami, the Miami Lakes Educational Center is the only vocational school in the system offering both high school courses and adult vocational training in the same facility. Students interested in automotive technology training can find a comprehensive certificate program in the field.

Automotive Service Technology Certificate

Miami Lakes Educational Center offers an automotive technology training program that takes about two years to complete. Students receive training in brakes and alignment, cooling systems, engine repair, fuel systems, emissions, heating and air conditioning and transmission repair and maintenance. Students who complete the program may apply their credits towards an associate degree program at Miami Dade College.
