Programs at St. Phillip's College
The Transportation Services Technologies Department at St. Phillip's College offers several certificates and associate's degree programs that prepare graduates for employment in the automotive field. Programs offer students an opportunity to service modern vehicles and gain professional experience. Students can also pursue a specialty certificate in several automotive areas. Graduates of the program are eligible to pursue Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification.
Automotive Technology Specialist Certificates
Students at St. Phillip's College have the option to enroll in automotive technology specialty certificate programs. These options include brake and front end, automotive performance and transmissions. All three programs are 19/20 credits, and students must complete six classes over two semesters. In addition to courses in each specialty, a practicum or internship is also required.
Certificate of Completion Ford Maintenance and Light-Duty Repair
The Ford maintenance and light-duty repair certificate is 25 credits and takes two semesters to complete. Courses in the program cover topics involving electrical systems, automotive electronics, engine performance analysis, steering, brakes and climate controlled systems. Internships take place at a local Ford or Lincoln Mercury dealership.
Certificate of Completion Automotive Technology
Students enrolled in the automotive technology certificate program must complete three semesters of coursework, including a summer session internship. Courses in the program teach students about engines, drive trains, electrical systems, brakes and steering. The program is 30/31 credits, and students can transfer their credits into an automotive technology associate's degree program.
Associate of Applied Science General Motors Automotive Service Educational Program
The General Motors Automotive Service Educational Program (GM ASEP) leads to an Associate of Applied Science degree and can be completed in about two years. The GM program has a separate application from St. Phillip's College, and students must undergo a drug test and background check. In addition to full-time coursework, students take part in a cooperative internship at a GM dealership.
Associate of Applied Science in Automotive Technology - Option I
The automotive technology associate's degree at St. Phillip's College is a 2-year program that includes a summer session. While the first year of the program provides students with introductory automotive training, the second year features more advanced courses in climate control systems, automotive management, automotive electronics and engine performance analysis. This program is 65/66 credits and features an internship or practicum component.
Associate of Applied Science in Automotive Technology - Option II Ford ASSET
The Associate of Applied Science in Automotive Technology - Option II Ford ASSET program is 60 credits and combines academic coursework with a cooperative experience. Students are able to apply what they learn in a classroom environment into practical career training at a Ford dealership. The curriculum ensures that students understand how to diagnose and make automotive repairs.
Programs at South Texas Vocational Technical Institute
South Texas Vocational Technical Institute offers career training opportunities in several different areas, including health care and wellness and skilled trades. In addition to an automotive technology diploma, students can also pursue combination welding and HVAC training. All programs combine academic coursework with hands-on experience.
Automotive Service Technician Diploma
South Texas Vocational Technical Institute's automotive service technician diploma program provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to obtain an entry-level mechanic job. While the program can be completed in as little as 50 weeks, the school offers flexible scheduling options.
