Aviation Maintenance Schools, Universities and Colleges
Aviation maintenance personnel repair and maintain civilian and military aircraft. In selecting a school, prospective students interested in aviation maintenance may consider such factors as whether a college or university prepares them for Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification, curricular emphases and hands-on training opportunities.
How to Select an Aviation Maintenance School
A majority of personnel performing repair and maintenance on civilian aircraft are certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Students looking into aviation maintenance programs may want to select a school that offers an FAA certification test prep course in conjunction with its aviation maintenance degree curriculum; programs are generally available at the associate's level. Additionally, since most airlines prefer personnel with certification in both airframe mechanics and powerplant mechanics, students may want to seek aviation maintenance colleges offering programs or certification prep courses that focus on both.
Technological advances have greatly impacted the field of aviation maintenance, and skills in computers and electronics are vital to finding and securing jobs in aviation maintenance. Students, therefore, should consider looking into schools that offer a curriculum with a strong focus in computer technology. Other important topics of instruction for prospective students to look for in a curriculum are English, physics, mathematics, chemistry and mechanical drawing. Additionally, candidates may want to consider selecting an aviation maintenance technician school that is approved by the FAA; FAA-approved schools are required by law to offer students no less than 1,900 hours of classroom instruction.
Since aviation maintenance requires a great deal of mechanical aptitude, selecting a school that offers hands-on training in the form of cooperative education can better prepare students for real-life situations they will encounter on the job, as well as afford them opportunities to create contacts for future job opportunities. Cooperative education programs, also known as co-ops, consist of a combination of classroom study and paid work experience related to a student's field of study.
