Bachelors Degree Program in Hospitality Management

Hospitality management involves the operation of hotels and resorts, restaurants and entertainment facilities. Those with a desire to pursue a leadership role in the tourism and hospitality field might consider pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management. These programs are designed to teach students fundamental managerial skills, including research and critical thinking, team building, strategic planning, marketing and budgeting. They will also train students to improve profits and integrate new technology to aid in the success of their hospitality business. Graduates of these programs are qualified to pursue voluntary certification through the American Hotel and Lodging Association.
In order to commence a bachelor's degree program in hospitality management, applicants to most colleges and universities must have a high school diploma or equivalent; students transferring from an associate's degree program may need to have at least 60 completed credit hours in undergraduate courses. Many schools may also require specific prerequisite courses (specifically in the area of business), as well as a minimum GPA and certain ACT or SAT scores.
Hospitality management classes prepare students to effectively take on managerial and administrative roles in a wide range of tourism-related facilities. Students will learn decision-making, problem-solving and customer service skills, and they will study the similarities and differences between domestic and international tourism. The curriculum also gives students hands-on instruction in food and beverage services, conference and event planning, purchasing, inventory control and maintaining clients. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS, www.bls.gov), the number of employed lodging managers was 51,400 in 2010. More than 50% of managers were employed in hotels and motels. Employment for lodging managers is expected to grow by eight percent between 2010 and 2020. The average annual salary for lodging managers in 2012 was $54,800, according to the BLS.

Organizations such as the American Hotel and Lodging Association offer specialized certifications for hospitality managers. Experienced professionals can take exams to achieve designations such as certified hospitality supervisor, certified front desk manager or certified hospitality revenue manager.
