Bristol Technical Education Center

Bristol-based Bristol Technical Education Center offers a culinary arts certificate program that can prepare students to work in bakeries. Students are required to complete 900 hours of coursework that includes instruction in preparing and baking bread, among other topics. Upon completion, those hours can be applied to a baking state apprenticeship. The program is open to high school students and adults.

Gateway Community College

Gateway Community College is located in New Haven and offers a 30-credit culinary arts certificate. Students can enroll on a part-time or full-time basis. Students in the program learn how to use kitchen equipment and culinary products, handle foods and maintain safety protocols. They also take two baking and pastry arts courses that cover ingredients, breads, cake decorating, creams, sugar work and chocolate art. Hands-on training is obtained by preparing and serving dishes at the Long Wharf Campus dining facility.

Manchester Community College

Three culinary arts programs are offered at this school, which is based in Manchester. The professional baker certificate requires 24 credits and includes courses in baking principles, artisan bread and icing art. Students enrolled in the culinary arts certificate are required to complete 30 credits and take classes in food preparation, baking principles, nutrition and buffet catering. The 63-credit culinary arts associate degree curriculum includes many of the same courses in the culinary arts certificate program, though two icing decoration courses and several general education classes are also required. A practical work experience in a restaurant, bakery or other foodservice establishment is required for all three programs.

Naugatuck Valley Community College

Naugatuck Valley Community College is located in Waterbury and offers a certificate in culinary arts. The program requires that students complete 25-27 credits and take courses in food production, nutrition, catering management, food safety and food preparation. Students also take a baking class and an artisan breads class. Credits earned from the program can be transferred to an associate degree program.

Norwalk Community College

Situated in Norwalk, students at Norwalk Community College can pursue a culinary arts certificate. The program is 30 credits and takes two semesters to complete. Students are required to complete coursework in food preparation, introductory and advanced baking and pastry arts, nutrition and catering management. A cooperative education is also part of the program.
