Degrees at Johns Hopkins University

At the university's Whiting School of Engineering, undergraduate students have opportunities to participate in research, internships and study abroad programs. Research centers and institutes are primarily focused in areas of biomedical innovation, robotics, environmental studies and sustainable energy.

Bachelor of Science in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering

This discipline combines studies in chemistry, molecular science and biology with engineering fundamentals. Students can choose a concentration in interfaces and nanotechnology or molecular and cellular bioengineering. This program can prepare students for careers that involve chemical and biological entities and processes on a molecular level. Students can also use this program as preparation for medical school, usually by taking a few additional courses that aren't part of the program.

Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering

This ABET-approved program can prepare students to pursue graduate degrees or gain the necessary work experience to become licensed engineers. Students take a set of basic science and math courses, as well as core civil engineering courses. Civil engineering design and seminar classes are also required.

Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering

This program is ABET-accredited and designed to help students use engineering techniques to solve environmental problems. Students are required to complete basic science and math classes. In addition to basic engineering courses, students can choose courses from focus areas in environmental management and economics, environmental health engineering, environmental engineering science and environmental transport.

Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering

Students in this program are encouraged to focus their studies in at least one mechanical engineering subfield, such as thermofluids and thermofluid systems, mechanics and design, aerospace engineering, biomechanical engineering or robotics. Students can expect to take courses in statistics and mechanics of materials, mechanics-based design and materials selection. A capstone design project is required in order to complete the program.

Degrees at Morgan State University

Engineering students at Morgan State University can benefit from the Student Work Experience Program, which allows them to receive educational experience from internships, co-ops, assistantships, tutoring and summer jobs. The school awards the most engineering degrees to African-Americans within Maryland. All of the bachelor's programs are accredited by ABET.

Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering

The electrical engineering core curriculum consists of courses in electric circuits, digital logic and discrete systems. The program culminates in a senior design project. An optional track in electrical engineering-computer engineering is also available, with courses in computer architecture and digital electronics.

Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering

In Morgan State's industrial engineering program, students learn to create and modify the processes for making products or delivering goods. The program offers tracks in industrial and management systems, information and systems engineering, manufacturing systems and human engineering systems. Core program requirements include ergonomics and workplace design, manufacturing processes, quality control and product design. All students must complete a senior design project.

Degrees at Loyola University - Maryland

Students in all engineering undergraduate programs at Loyola University - Maryland are required to take theology courses during their senior year. All of the programs begin with basic engineering courses and move towards more design concepts during a student's junior and senior years.

Bachelor of Science in Engineering with a Concentration in Materials Engineering

Freshman studies place an emphasis on calculus and physics. The second-year curriculum begins to integrate studies in engineering materials, thermodynamics and linear circuit analysis. Students typically complete advanced engineering courses and electives before taking on a design project in their senior year.

Bachelor of Science in Engineering with a Concentration in Computer Engineering

Students begin by studying physics and calculus and then progress to courses in circuitry, digital logic and electronics in their sophomore year. Third-year studies incorporate discrete methods and systems analysis courses, and seniors are required to complete a design project.

Other School Options

University of Maryland - Baltimore County, which is only about nine miles west (15 minutes) of downtown Baltimore, offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral engineering degrees. Capitol College offers Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree programs in engineering; it also has a couple of graduate engineering programs that can be completed online.
