Diploma in General Banking

A general banking diploma program is designed for individuals with some experience in the banking industry but would like to broaden their banking knowledge and advance to middle management positions. The American Institute of Banking (www.aba.com) along with many technical schools, colleges and universities, offers diploma and certificate programs. Depending on the school, a diploma or certificate is issued.

The banking diploma program covers the banking industry, the economy, ethics in banking, legal standards and trends. While there are specialty diploma and certificate programs in areas such as bank teller, personal banker, bank operations and commercial lending, the diploma program gives entry-level candidates fundamental banking knowledge about basic operations, accounting, customer relations and compliance issues.

Education Prerequisites

Most entry-level banking positions do not require prior banking experience other than customer service and cash handling experience. Strong high school mathematics and English grades are common requirements. Most programs require students to hold a high school diploma or equivalent.

Program Coursework

General banking diploma students concentrate on mathematics and communications courses, which are two of the most used skills in banking jobs. Other possible courses are:

  • Accounting
  • Economics
  • Business communications
  • Banking and the law
  • Consumer credit
  • Ethics in banking

Popular Career Options

Work experience and a diploma in general banking may result in more opportunities in the banking industry for graduates. Possible careers include:

  • Head teller
  • New accounts clerk
  • Customer service representative

Continuing Education Information

Upon completion of the banking diploma program, graduates may seek other diploma or certification programs in specialty areas, such as small business banking, bank marketing and mortgage lending. These programs are available through trade organizations, colleges and some universities.
