Barber Courses and Classes Overview
Barbers are licensed professionals who typically provide hair and facial hair services to men. Those interested in this career can take courses in barbering as part of a full postsecondary non-degree or degree program.
Barber courses preparing graduates for state licensing board examinations are offered at community colleges, cosmetology schools and barber colleges. Students can choose to earn a diploma, certificate or associate's degree in barbering. All of these programs of study are designed to comply with state regulations that require 500-1,500 hours of instruction and experience, depending on the state. Most courses are offered in combined laboratory-classroom settings, so students may learn hair styling and beard care by demonstration, experimentation and instructor guidance.
Barbering programs often start with a course in barber theory and go on to provide an introduction to hair and scalp care. Students learn to shampoo hair, do scalp massages and drape clients. Hair care courses include those that teach students to give men haircuts and perform hair coloring services. They might also learn to work with hair pieces and perform other chemical hair styling services. Students usually take courses that teach them ways to design facial hair, shave clients and apply after-shaving products.
Other courses common in barbering programs teach students to provide customer service and manage a salon. Students usually also complete a practicum course in which they practice performing services for clients, and they might take a course that reviews their state's barber examination's topics.
