Tampa, FL, Schools with Barber Programs

There are at least two schools an hour or less from Tampa, FL, that offer programs that meet state standards for barber training. This article gives an overview of these programs, which are both offered by public schools less than an hour from downtown Tampa.   • D.G. Erwin Technical Center is roughly four miles outside of downtown Tampa. The school, which is part of the Hillsborough County Public Schools system, offers a barbering program for new students and students who have cosmetology experience.
  • Although it's about 51 miles from Tampa's downtown, the Manatee Technical Institute in Bradenton, FL, is another school students may want to consider. A barbering licensure course can be completed here to prepare for state licensure.

D.G. Erwin Technical Center

This school can accommodate students with special needs or disabilities. Career planning services are also available on campus. The tuition for the barber programs includes books, supplies, student fees and insurance.

Barbering I Program

The barbering I program is 1,200 clock hours in length completed over a 19-month period. Students receive experience in not only hair care but skin care as well. The hair training portion of the program goes over styling, cutting, beard and mustache designing and trimming, relaxing, coloring, lightening and permanent waving. The skin care portion covers facials.

Barbering II Program

This barber program is for students who already have a cosmetology license. This program takes 300 clock hours to finish, which is about 6 months.

Manatee Technical Institute

This technical and career education school offers a variety of adult education, career preparation and personal enrichment programs, as well as online courses. The barbering program is offered through the human services division.

Barbering Licensure Program

In order to participate in this licensing program for barbers, students are required to purchase a kit with the necessary equipment used in barbering. Students learn about skin disorders and diseases and various barbering techniques. In addition to practical classroom work and theoretical coursework, students are required to participate in live clinical situations. As part of the learning process here, students learn about sanitizing, cleaning and decontaminating work areas. The entire length of this program is about 1,200 hours.
