New York City Schools with Barbering Programs

To become a professional barber, students must first graduate from a barbering program; the number of required hours is determined by the state-approved school. One must also complete two years as a barber apprentice under a licensed barber before applying for a full barbering license. The American Barber Institute (ABI) - School of Barbering & Cosmetology is one of the schools available in the New York City (NYC) area with barbering programs, offering a basic program and a barbering plus program. The school's main campus is in the Chelsea area of NYC, with an additional campus located downtown in the Tribeca section. Information in the table below is for both campuses, except where noted.

Degrees at ABI School of Barbering & Cosmetology

The New York State Department of Education has approved American Barber Institute's coursework and has also licensed the school. With services offered to the general public, students have the opportunity to work on actual customers.

Basic Barbering Program

The basic barbering program can be completed in 288 hours. Students participate in both morning and afternoon sessions for 2.5 months. In this program, students learn about different styles of haircutting for women and men, along with clipper and scissor techniques. Other topics covered include shampooing, facial massage and sterilization of barbering tools, among others. Students are also taught how to prepare for the state board exam.

Barbering Plus Program

The barbering plus program covers the same material as the basic program, but adds instruction in universal precautions. Like the basic program, this program requires both morning and afternoon sessions. However, this program runs for 5.5 months, covering a total of about 660 hours. Financial aid is available for those who qualify.

Other School Options

Two other schools in the NYC area offering barber training include the Big Apple Barber School, located in the city, and The Long Island Barber Institute, located in Hempstead, about 28 miles from New York City. Graduation from either school's programs can prepare students for barber licensure.
