Barbering Schools in North Carolina
According to the North Carolina Board of Barber Examiners (NCBBE), individuals must hold a registered apprentice or licensed barber certificate of registration to work as a barber in the state. To become a registered barber, individuals must complete at least 1,528 hours of training at an approved barber school, perform a 12-month apprenticeship supervised by a licensed barber and pass a state board examination.
There are approximately 25 colleges in North Carolina that offer barber training. However, only four of these schools are public institutions. Review the following overviews of these schools to make a sound educational decision.
Central Carolina Community College
Sanford's community college campus offers three different barbering programs, including a certificate program, a diploma program and an Associate in Applied Science degree program. Common courses in all three programs include barbering concept levels 1-3 and barbering clinic levels 1-3. Barbering concept courses discuss hair treatments, skincare, sanitation, hair processing, manicures, product knowledge and body therapy treatments. During barbering clinics, students work with actual clients and practice such skills as shampooing, cutting hair, using hair chemical products and applying various skin treatments.
Students in the associate degree program receive more advanced training in level four barbering concepts and clinic courses. They also learn about trichology, the study of the scalp. Individuals who complete any one of these three barbering programs are eligible to sit for the state licensing examination. Enrollment is limited to 30 students per semester, as of 2013.
Fayetteville Technical Community College
The Fayetteville-based campus and the Continuing Education Center offer a barber training program to aspiring barbers. The class size is limited, so pre-registration is a must. Accepted students take part in the 1,528-hour, 3-part program, which prepares individuals to sit for the state board licensure exam.
James Sprunt Community College
Kenansville's James Sprunt Community College has a School of Barbering that requires students to preregister and hold an NCBEE-issued learner permit. The course leads to a certificate and meets the state's 1,528-hour requirement, allowing graduates to sit for the board exam. Course topics include bacteriology, hygiene, razor cutting, light therapy and facial treatments, among others.
Roanoke-Chowan Community College
Located in Ahoskie, this campus offers one diploma program in barbering. Records from 2013 showed that there was only one faculty member associated with the program. Students complete 48 unit hours of barbering core classes, including four levels of barbering concept courses and four levels of barbering clinic classes.
Coursework covers barbering equipment, hair cutting techniques, sanitation, professional ethics, hair drying, chemical usage, skincare treatments, hair design, scalp treatments, shaving techniques and vocational preparation strategies. Students who complete this diploma program can sit for the North Carolina licensing exam.
