Essential Information

Emergency medical technician (EMT) programs in the San Francisco Bay Area of California are commonly offered as certificate programs at the EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate and EMT-Paramedic levels. These programs include classroom study and field experience to prepare students to provide immediate medical assistance to ill or injured patients before or while they are being transported to a healthcare facility. Graduates are usually prepared to take the EMT certification exams required for their chosen level of training. Since certified EMTs need to take refresher courses to meet continuing education requirements, some local schools offer these courses as well.

City College of San Francisco

The City College of San Francisco (CCSF) is one of the largest 2-year, public schools in the San Francisco Bay Area and offers academic and vocational programs leading to certificates of completion and associate's degrees. The school offers an introductory EMT certificate program that provides students with the educational background necessary to sit for the EMT-Basic certification exam. Through classroom lectures and clinical training, students learn how to provide patient assessment, CPR, basic life support and respiratory emergency care. The school also offers an EMT-Basic refresher course for those seeking to renew their certification.

The EMT-Paramedic certificate program includes courses on paramedic procedures and various emergency traumas, as well as mandatory in-hospital clinical experience and a pre-hospital field internship.
