Most Program Variety

Attending a school that offers numerous fields of study may allow students who are undecided in a major to complete courses in a variety of subjects. The three traditional schools within 20 miles of Beaumont with the most program variety offer approximately 50-100 fields of study.

1 - Lamar University

Located in Beaumont, this school enrolls about 14,000 students and is a member of the Texas State University System. The institution offers associate's, bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programs in approximately 100 fields of study. According to U.S. News & World Report, popular subjects at the university included the health professions, multi-interdisciplinary studies, engineering, general studies and business.

According to the NCES, the school only awarded associate's degrees in the field of registered nursing in 2011-2012. At that same time, the most popular field of study for bachelor's degree-seeking students was multi/interdisciplinary studies, while education administration and leadership was the most popular subject for master's and doctoral degree-seeking students, reported the NCES. In fact, the school awarded more than 1,000 master's degrees in that field during the school year, based on NCES figures.

2 - Lamar Institute of Technology

This school is located in Beaumont. It offers less than 1-year certificate, less than 2-year certificate and associate's degree programs to about 3,500 students. Students at the school can select from about 50 different fields of study.

The NCES reported that in 2011-2012, the institution awarded the most less than 1-year certificates in the field of criminal justice/police studies and the most associate's degrees in chemical technology. At that same time, the school only awarded less than 2-year certificates in the field of emergency medical technology.

3 - Lamar State College - Port Arthur

Lamar State College is situated in Port Arthur, about 22 miles from Beaumont. The college, which is also a member of the Texas State University System, offers less than 1-year certificate, less than 2-year certificate and associate's degree programs in roughly 49 fields of study.

The NCES reported that in 2011-2012, the college awarded the most less than 1-year certificates in the fields of drafting design technology and automotive mechanics technology. At that same time, the school awarded the most less than 2-year certificates in licensed practical/vocational nursing. The most popular associate's degree program was in the field of registered nursing.

Lowest Net Price

The NCES calculates a school's net price by subtracting the average amount of financial aid students receive from the total cost to attend the school. Financial aid may be received from the government or school. The figures below are derived from the NCES and pertain to the net prices paid by full-time undergraduate students during the 2010-2011 school year. The three schools near Beaumont cost about $8,000-$12,000 in 2012-2013.

1 - Lamar State College - Port Arthur

This school's net price for 2010-2011 was $7,985. The NCES reported that in that same school year, 85% of the school's full-time, beginning undergraduate students received financial aid. The NCES also reported that 63% of all undergraduate students received financial aid in the form of grants or scholarships and that 30% of all undergraduate students at the college received federal loans.

During the 2012-2013 school year, in-state, full-time undergraduate students paid an estimated $5,052 in tuition and fees, while out-of-state students paid an estimated $15,523, reported the NCES. At that same time, all full-time undergraduate students paid an estimated $1,428 for books and supplies.

2 - Lamar Institute of Technology

Students attending the Lamar Institute of Technology during the 2010-2011 school year paid an average net price of $8,088. During that same year, the NCES reported that 78% of the school's beginning undergraduate students received financial aid, the majority of which was in the form of grants or scholarships. Estimated tuition and fees for the 2012-2013 school year for in-state students were $3,915, while out-of-state students paid $12,339.

3 - Lamar University

This university's net price of $12,016 for the 2010-2011 school year places it third in this category. For the 2012-2013 school year, in-state, full-time undergraduate students paid an estimated $8,544 in tuition and fees, while out-of-state students paid an estimated $20,574. The NCES also reported that 72% of the university's full-time beginning undergraduates received some form of financial aid in 2010-2011 and that 61% of all the university's undergraduate students received grant or scholarship aid.

Highest Graduation Rates

The NCES calculates a school's graduation rate by determining the number of full-time undergraduate students who complete their chosen program within 150% of the normal amount of time. The overall graduation rates for the three schools near Beaumont are based on NCES figures; unfortunately, the highest graduation rate among these three schools was just over 30%.

1 - Lamar University

Ranking first in this category, this school has an overall graduation rate of 31% and a transfer-out rate of 39%, according to the NCES. The NCES also stated that the school has a 4-year graduation rate of just 10%. The retention rate for full-time students who began their program in fall 2010 and returned in fall 2011 was 65%.

2 - Lamar Institute of Technology

This school had an overall graduation rate of 19%, according to the NCES. However, it had higher retention rates, with 47% of full-time and 32% of part-time students who began their studies in the fall of 2010 returning in the fall of 2011.

3 - Lamar State College - Port Arthur

This school's 16% overall graduation rate places it third in this category. According to the NCES, the college had a 24% transfer-out rate. Additionally, also based on NCES figures, the school had a 48% retention rate for full-time students who began their studies in the fall of 2010 and returned in the fall of 2011.

Lowest Student-Faculty Ratios

The student-faculty ratios reported below are based on figures provided by the NCES. The three traditional schools near Beaumont all boast student-faculty ratios that were lower than 20:1.

1 - Lamar Institute of Technology

This school's student-faculty ratio of 17:1 results in it ranking first in this category. The NCES reported that in the fall of 2011, the school employed 76 full-time and 78 part-time faculty members, all of whom were instructors.

2 - Lamar State College - Port Arthur

Ranking second in this category, this college has a student-faculty ratio of 18:1. According to the college, during the spring of the 2011-2012 school year, the college employed 123 faculty members, about half of whom possessed at least a master's degree.

3 - Lamar University

This school has a student-faculty ratio of 20:1. U.S News & World Report stated that approximately 32% of the school's classes contained fewer than 20 students. According to the university, it employed a total of 624 faculty members in the fall of 2012.
