Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering
Biomedical engineering is a largely interdisciplinary field. Students in a biomedical engineering Ph.D. program study the life sciences in by borrowing theories and computation practices from engineering, computer science and advanced mathematics. Because of this, many students begin Biomedical Ph.D. programs by participating in a fundamental life science curriculum in the first or second year; because of the advanced nature of the material, these classes can sometimes be taken from a medical school's curriculum.
Educational Prerequisites
In order to enroll in biomedical engineering doctorate programs, students must at least have a bachelor's degree, although it is much more common for students to have a master's degree; in fact, some programs require students to have completed a master's before applying. The strongest applicants have degrees in biology, mathematics or computer science. Most schools prefer students who have a strong interdisciplinary background or can demonstrate experience in interdisciplinary research.
