Biotechnology Courses and Classes
Biotechnology courses are part of bachelor's and master's degree programs in biotechnology and bioscience. Through these courses, students examine the genetic makeup of organisms found on Earth, including plants, animals and people, the genetic diseases that affect them and possible solutions.
Introduction to the Biotechnology Industry Course
Students taking this introductory course begin understanding the role biotechnology plays in the fields of agriculture, human and animal genetics. They explore methods for manipulating genetics to create vaccines and reduce genetic problems that affect humans. Often, students are introduced to genetic diseases found in human beings and the types of treatments currently being explored to reduce and, eventually, eliminate them. Usually, this biotechnology class is taken at the beginning of an associate's, bachelor's or master's degree program.
Through this intermediate-level course, students learn how to convert data obtained from experiments and research into computer languages, such as Perl and BLAST. Students examine the basic frameworks for these computer languages and learn how to read and interpret the data correctly. They handle files containing large amounts of data, and use the data to create graphs and analyze the results.
Issues in Biotechnology Course
Students taking this biotechnology class examine common ethical, legal and political issues in the field, as well as current developments. Students will examine issues relating to plants, animals, humans, the environment and the genetic makeup of life, including how the human body reacts to genetic change. Often, this course examines controversial options that could be used to prevent genetic disease, such as stem cell research and genetic screening of infants.
Diseases and Drugs Course
In this graduate-level course, students examine viral and parasitical diseases and the ways they attack the human body. The course also covers past and present approaches to conquering these diseases through drugs, gene research, new therapies and development of the immune system. Often, students taking this course read case studies and research articles pertaining to genetics, diseases and drugs.
Molecular Genetics Course
This advanced lecture course goes into detail describing genetic processes like gene replication, translation and expression. Students taking this class break down each step of the experimental process in order to discuss the theory of each step as well as the analysis of results. This master's degree course touches on practical applications of genome analysis, bacterial viruses and molecular genetics so graduates will have an idea of how their skills can be applied to a variety of real-world problems.
