Boat Mechanic School and College Program Information
A marine mechanic is responsible for providing preventive maintenance and repair on boats and other marine vehicles. Although most boat mechanics receive on-the-job training, some certificate, degree and training programs are available in the field.
Finding a Marine Mechanic School
Marine mechanic training programs are available at a relatively small number of colleges and private schools. These are usually located on the waterfront, and so student relocation may be necessary.
A number of schools teach a block of courses related to marine technologies, including engines, welding and fiberglass repair. These programs may not necessarily end with a certificate or a diploma. Students with some work experience in the field may wish to enhance their skills by taking specific courses in areas in which they are unfamiliar.
Students should inquire about the hands-on opportunities for practicing their newly acquired mechanical skill sets. The prospective school's available facilities and workshops are also central to the question of choosing the right school. Students will also want to investigate if the marine mechanic program teaches marine electronics in addition to engines and structural mechanics. The school's job placement rate of marine technology program graduates is also a useful gauge as to the school's academic effectiveness.

Associates of Applied Science in Marine Technology
An associates degree program will take two to three years to complete, and usually requires general education courses in addition to mechanics. Upon completion of an associates degree program, graduates should be able to find work repairing fishing vessels, personal watercraft, charter vessels, tour vessels, boat engines, marine transmissions, generators or other related vehicles and devices.
