Boat Mechanic Colleges in Florida

Boat mechanics courses are offered through marine service technology certificate programs at technical colleges throughout Florida. Curriculum for these programs is presented through six separate course offerings, completed in 1,350 required hours. All of the colleges listed offer similar courses and program requirements, with some offering either full- or part-time enrollment. Below are short overviews of the ten public schools offering boat mechanic programs, as well as a comparison table showing individual school offerings and tuition information.

CHOICE Technical Center

CHOICE Technical Center in Fort Walton Beach hosts a certificate program in marine service technology in which students learn how to repair and service multiple marine engines. The curriculum is split between classroom and hands-on labs covering electrical systems, drive systems and boat rigging. Education in boating accessories is also included. Students have the opportunity to earn two Yamaha certificates during the program.

Fort Myers Institute of Technology

At this Fort Myers school, students in the marine service technology program learn the fundamentals of marine mechanics, boat repair and accessories. The 1,350-hour program is split into six separate sections, each dedicated to specific skills. Technician skills are covered in the stern drive, outboard engine, inboard gas and inboard diesel courses. The program is offered on a full-time basis only.

George Stone Technical Center

Pensacola's George Stone Technical Center's marine service technology program is divided into two separate sections. The first section includes two 300-hour courses in marine rigging and outboard engines. The second section expands on technician courses with curricula involving outboard engines, stern drives and inboard gas and diesel systems. This part of the program is generally completed in 750 hours. Taken together, the two segments comprise the full 1,350 hours. Students can study on a full- or part-time basis.

Lorenzo Walker Institute of Technology

Students looking to study boat mechanics can pursue a marine service technology certificate at this Naples-based college. During the 1,350-hour program, students learn to maintain and repair both 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines. Curriculum also covers repair of outboard engine systems and inboard diesel fuel systems. The program runs from 8:00 a.m. until 2:15 p.m., Monday through Friday during the Spring and Fall semesters; summer hours vary.

Manatee Technical Institute

Nestled in Bradenton, Manatee Technical Institute offers a marine service technology certificate program in which students learn the skills necessary to adjust, disassemble, inspect and repair 2-cycle and 4-cycle boat engines. The six courses also include instruction on inboard gas and inboard diesel engines. Full-time students should have the program completed in a little over 15 months.

Marchman Technical Education Center

Marchman Technical Education Center in New Port Richey hosts a certificate program in marine service technology for students looking to advance their skills in the service and repair of mechanical boat engine systems. Throughout six courses, students learn about boat rigging, trailers, hydraulic systems and power transfer. The program requires completion of 1,350 total course hours.

Pinellas Technical Education Center

This full-time program in Clearwater includes training in the maintenance and repair of 2-stroke engine systems, as well as inboard gas and diesel engines. The entire certificate program can be completed in a little over 15 months, and courses must be taken in sequence.

Sarasota County Technical Institute

Students learn to service and overhaul both inboard and outboard marine engines at this Sarasota program. Technician courses explore electrical, fuel, cooling and lubrication systems. Coursework includes 300 hours of marine rigger training, 600 hours of technical outboard engine study and 450 hours of technical studies in gas engines, diesel engines and stern drive systems. The program takes about one year to complete.

Tom P. Haney Technical Center

Situated in Panama City, this marine service technology program is offered to both full- and part-time enrollees. Students work with inboard and outboard engine systems, learning to triage failures and complete repairs on multiple engine, fuel and lubrication systems. A majority of the 1,350-hour program is dedicated to hands-on class time.

William T. McFatter Technical Center

William T. McFatter Technical Center in Davie helps prepare students for employment in the field of boat mechanics through its marine service technology certificate program. During the 12-month program, students gain the skills needed to overhaul and repair multiple boat engine and electrical systems. Curriculum is presented through both classroom and online courses. The program can be completed through either part-time or full-time enrollment.
